Re: Lairig Gartain by Border Reiver » Mon Jul 16, 2012 2:23 pm Looking at the area in Google Earth, there's a few paths been made between 220m & 260m, but the beauty of Scotland is that you don't have to follow paths and only the terrain can prevent you from going where you want On a wet and windy day though it may not be the place to be. As we descended the Lairig Gartain the rain stopped and as the sun broke through, we had some beautiful views ahead over Glen Coe and to the Mamores in the far distance. -Best bit: The highest point of the Lairig Gartain (the col is marked with a cairn). Look behind you as breathtaking views open up towards Loch Etive. -Level of difficulty: 2/5 - It's not too long and the trail is well-defined. -More info: Best undertaken in an anti-clockwise direction to avoid meeting a (sometimes impassable) burn at the very end! 1. The Lairig Gartain pass between the mountains of Buachaille Etive Mòr (left) and Buachaille Etive Beag (right) in Glen Coe, Scotland. Having climbed up Beinn a'Chrulaiste in the dark for a forecast cloudless dawn with bright sunshine, the reality was very different, snow flurries and freezing 40mph winds. But that never stops photography - you've got to make the best of what is given to you.
  2. The route I'd chosen was to climb the hill from the Lairig Gartain side and return by the more traditional route down into the Lairig Eilde. After negotiating the rather boggy area near the stream, which flows out of the Lochain na Fola into the River Coupall, much firmer ground was followed up the valley. After about a kilometre I left the path and began a slow climb away from the valley.
